Measure the actual item first. Your crate’s internal dimensions should be based on the item size plus the amount of protection needed around it.

For a sturdy item, a small amount of clearance may be enough. Fragile, heavy, or irregularly shaped items often need additional room for foam, moving blankets, bracing, and other protective materials.
